Data Protection: Why should you care?

Data Protection - that pesky topic thats become increasingly relevant since contact tracing apps became a thing in our society, since WhatsApp caused quite the stir when updating their terms and conditions, and since Google headed off to the Supreme Court (UK) to fight off data protection claims.

While the majority of us will (hopefully) not become embroiled in anything as exciting, that doesn't mean we should care any less about Privacy - whether we are doing something in our professional lives with peoples information or whether it concerns us as consumers and customers.

So, why should you care? Here are 3 top reasons:

  • Privacy can be a massive USP when done right. Your customers are becoming increasingly savvy and if they can see you care about them then they are more likely to trust you. Who would have thought legal compliance could make a solid marketing strategy? Apple do and so can you.

  • Want your business to incur a fine of up to 4% worldwide turnover? I didn't think so!

  • Don't become a PR nightmare. People still remember the Meta/ Facebook data sharing disaster, and did you see how quickly people jumped from WhatsApp to Signal? Don't let that be you.

    BONUS
Don't forget that you're a customer too. Treat others the way you want to be treated and all this data protection and GDPR stuff might start to make a bit more sense.
